Learning to Make Jewelry
Good quality pays off in the long run When I first started making jewelry, I had received zero instruction. I hadn't even read about how to do a proper square knot or how to finish off fishing line. My jewelry was pretty, but I did not have quality finishings and sometimes not even quality material. With time I started learning (some by trial and error, some by instruction) and my jewelry kept looking better and better. But, there were times when I would bump into someone that bought my jewelry when I had first started and see them wearing a pair of earrings I had made with some awfully shaped simple loops, or with craft wire that had tarnished... it was simply embarrassing! And it was all because I hadn't taken the time to learn about the basics, about materials and also I didn't want to spend money on it. Now I understand that when you pay for knowledge you will be later using, it's really an investment. So, don't be afraid to 'invest' some money on a tutorial, or to buy a how-to magazine or book, it will pay off in the future. Your customers will appreciate your craftsmanship, your jewelry will last longer looking good and it will all come back to you in more sales. My favorite magazine is Step by Step Wire Jewelry, which offers projects for different levels. Also for some free tutorials on wire basics, check out the Bead and Button Magazine site . |
